Is It Selfish to Put Yourself First? (What Self Made Actually Means)
Putting yourself first is not selfish. It is the only position from which you can be useful to anyone else, including your business.
Putting yourself first is not selfish, it is the requirement. You cannot fix anyone else's health, money, or mindset while your own is a mess. Selfish only turns bad at the point where you stop caring about the other person entirely. Everything before that line is just maintenance.
The oxygen mask is not a metaphor
Put your own mask on first, then help the person next to you. The reason that instruction exists is that the alternative kills both of you. Take health: you should not be managing someone else's diet while your own is broken. You will not fix them. You will amplify what is already wrong. The same is true of money, of business advice, of every kind of help people hand out from a position they have not earned.
You become what is around you
If you are depressed and you go find depressed people, you get more depressed. That is not a judgment, it is just how input works. You are a reflection of what surrounds you, and if the room agrees that nothing is your fault, the room will keep you exactly where you are.
What self made actually means
Self made does not mean nobody helped you. It means you made the decisions. Somebody can talk you out of quitting, and you can credit them for it, and you are still the one who had to stand up. Somebody can tell you to stop smoking a hundred times. You are the one who has to stop.
You chose the people who helped you
Here is where most of the argument falls apart. If your spouse carried you through the worst stretch of your life, do you owe part of your success to them? On the surface, yes. Underneath, you chose them. You could have married someone who did not support you, and that would have been your fault too. Your decisions have consequences in both directions. Picking the right people is not luck, it is the decision.
Your circle is a decision, not an inheritance
You do not need proximity to build a circle. Your brain does not draw a hard line between the people in the room and the people in your ears. Spend enough hours consuming someone who operates at a level above you and you start taking traits off them. Books do the same thing. So do podcasts.
Which means the excuse dies. If you are the fifth person in a group of four people going nowhere, that is what you are consuming. Change the input and the output follows. The algorithm will happily feed you more of whatever you already believe, including the belief that none of this is your fault, so you have to override it on purpose.
Guilt is a bad reason to say yes
Never do something because you feel guilty. Do it because it benefits both of you. Guilt automatically makes the exchange one sided, which means you show up resentful and the other person gets a version of you that is not real.
My cohost got asked to spend money he had already committed to equipment on a family trip. He said no. The first thing that hit him was the picture of being the bad son. Ten seconds later it was gone, because the real question is not what people will think. It is whether you actually want to go. If the honest answer is guilt, say no and offer the counter: I cannot do this, but can we do that instead.
Entitlement is control wearing a nicer shirt
People get upset about your time when they realize they cannot control it anymore. Living ten minutes away does not entitle anyone to more of your calendar. When someone keeps score of how often you call, they are usually pointing at a void they never dealt with and asking you to fill it. That is not your job. You are responsible for your own happiness. Your relationships should amplify it, not supply it.
Accountability is the trait that separates leaders from workers
Nine times out of ten, the people who are actually successful take accountability. They ask what they could have done differently. The people who blame stay followers, because they are waiting for someone with the guts to own the outcome.
I told someone to grab the light boxes out of the trunk. He grabbed the heavy bag instead, hurt his back, and told me it was my fault for asking. That reaction is normal, and that is the problem. Owning it means looking in the mirror and saying I got fired because of me, or I lost that relationship because of me. Most people would rather carry the blame story than the responsibility, because the story lets them sleep.
It is easier to blame someone than to take responsibility. That is exactly why taking responsibility is leverage.
For operators: selfish only works if it is mutual
The people who really make it are not running around taking. They are looking for the setup where helping you helps them. Every business relationship and every personal relationship has to be mutually beneficial. The moment you feel like you got one over on somebody, that is a bad relationship, even if you came out ahead on the ledger.
Game theory says the same thing in colder language. Cooperate by default, punish defection immediately, then rebuild and cooperate again. Owners get this wrong in two directions: they either give until they resent the client, or they extract until the client leaves. Both are the same failure to price the exchange honestly.
Be selfish enough to leave some people behind. Not selfish enough to stop caring about anyone. That is the whole line, and we argued it out in the Self Made Or Selfish episode of the show. If you want this applied to how you run your gym or studio, that is the coaching.

Common questions
Is it selfish to put yourself first?
No. Putting yourself first is the precondition for being useful to anyone else. It is the oxygen mask rule: you cannot fix someone else's health, money, or mindset while your own is broken, and trying to do it anyway usually amplifies the damage. Selfish only becomes a problem when you stop caring about the other person entirely.
What does self made actually mean?
Self made does not mean nobody helped you. It means you made the decisions. You chose your circle, you chose what you consumed, you chose to keep going at the point where quitting was available. You can credit the people who pushed you and still be the only person responsible for the outcome.
How do I stop feeling guilty for saying no to family?
Separate guilt from desire before you answer. Ask yourself whether you want to go or whether you are afraid of how you will be seen if you do not. If it is guilt, the answer is no, because anything done out of guilt is not mutually beneficial. Then offer a real counter: I cannot do this, but I can do that.
Why do some people feel entitled to your time?
Because they are outsourcing their happiness to you. When someone keeps score of how often you call or visit, they are usually filling a void they never addressed themselves. Proximity does not create obligation. The strongest relationships have no time requirement attached to them.
