Accountability Is Leverage: What It Actually Means
Most people use 'accountability' to mean blame. It's the opposite. Accountability is the only lever you actually control — and that's exactly why it works.
Accountability is leverage because owning a problem is the only thing that lets you move it. The moment you decide a result is yours — your pricing, your training inputs, your last ten decisions — you gain the ability to change it. Blame feels better for about an hour and then traps you, because you can't fix something you've assigned to someone else.
Blame is comfortable and useless
The economy, your genetics, your schedule, the algorithm, your business partner — every one of these might be partly true. None of them are useful. The second you explain a problem instead of owning it, you've handed the steering wheel to something you can't reach. You've bought comfort and sold control.
Leverage is a small input that moves a large output. Accountability qualifies because the input — owning the result — is free, and the output is everything downstream of it.
What it looks like in practice
In business
Revenue is down. The accountable version isn't "the market is soft." It's "which of my last ten decisions produced this, and which one do I change first?" One of those sentences has a next step. The other one has an excuse.
In money
The economy didn't empty your account. Your decisions did — and that's the good news, because they were yours to make differently.
In health
It usually isn't your metabolism or your calendar. It's the inputs. Own those and the results stop being a mystery.
I take accountability for everything, because it gives me something to fix.
The catch
Accountability without mechanics is just self-blame, which is worse than useless. Owning a result only becomes leverage when it's attached to a specific input you change on Monday. "It's my fault" is not a plan. "I'm underpriced by 30% and I'm fixing it this week" is.
That's the whole game: own the input, change the input, watch the output move. Everything I coach and most of what I talk about on the show is some version of that loop.
